Can a Princess be a Firefighter? by Carole P. Roman

I received this book from the author/publisher for the purpose of this review. All comments and opinions are entirely my own.

The Synopsis:

Two little girls pepper their father with questions about whether or not they can be a profession and still be a princess. Motivated by her granddaughter’s fascination with all things ‘princess, ‘ Carole P. Roman penned this adorable poem celebrating all the wonderful possibilities waiting ahead for them.

My Review:

Can a Princess be a Firefighter? is a sweet book that encourages children to dream big and to never limit their imaginations. It is written with rhythmic rhyming words in 2nd person; which I found to be very fascinating; and has a wide range of careers to choose from. The careers mentioned are more than the just usual doctor, lawyer, or nurse, but she actually notes some careers that would be new to the child and add to their vocabulary, such as “cowpoke” “accountant” and “mayor”. These job positions mentioned could lead to many learning discussions with the young reader.

I liked that Carole makes sure to mention that anyone can have more than one career and she eases the child’s mind that one can always pursue different dreams and change their minds. The pictures are simple, but capture the words perfectly and the book’s mission is to help the young readers pursue their dreams and to never limit their thinking.

In case you are not sure what I meant by “the book is written in 2nd person”, it means when you are reading the book, the words seem to be speaking directly to you rather than simply telling a story (this sentence is written in 2nd person). Because of this, I was a little lost when I first began reading, but once I realized that the author wished to speak directly to her readers, the confusion was gone and I was impressed with how she wrote the book from the father to the princesses (us).

Even though this book speaks about, and is mainly directed towards, young girls; a young boy could easily learn from this book (e.g. reading along with a sister, ect), although I would not recommend purchasing this book for an only boy audience.

Overall, I give Can a Princess be a Firefighter? 4 out of 5 stars and do recommend it to anyone who as a young girl under the age of probably 8 or 9.
